Well, as a female who was once all over feminism like it was a Harry Potter convention I would have to say that it’s not about starving yourself to give women the right to anymore, but it’s become something perhaps greater then that.
Before I continue though, I’ll give you a little background as to why I’m talking about this. You see, lately I've been watching old episodes of the show Ally McBeal, a funny, quirky, and sometimes depressing comedy about a single female lawyer working in Boston (from 1997 to 2002) and about the same time this show came on the air, this article appeared (ok, so it’s not the actual article, but someone talking about it, the point is it’s about accusing the show of being anti-feminist).
So in this show, you have Ally hallucinating about various things (dancing babies and Al green amongst other things) and you have John and his whistling nose, you have Richard and his selfishness, you have Elaine and her face bra, Nell and her coldness, Ling and her bitchiness, Billy and his niceness and Georgia trying to keep everything together. (Later on of course you have Mark and his girlfriend-who’s-actually-a-man and Larry and his omg-it’s-robert-downey-jr-ness.) but one thing I’ve noticed how skinny all the women on this show were, and it turns out that most of them were anorexic, I mean, Calista Flockart has come out recently and admitted to it, Courtney Thorne-Smith was released from her contract early because of it, Portia DiRossi has quite publicly stated she’s battled with body image her whole life and Lucy Liu’s pretty freaking Skinny as well. I mean, the only normal sized women on this show were Nicole Carison who ended up getting schizophrenia anyway and Jane Karakwaski who said that some days on set she felt fat in comparison to all the other women.
So whilst I refuse to admit that this show is anti-feminist, there are things to be questioned about it. Was it simply that Hollywood at that time? Or was David E Kelly the guy Billy was based on?
It's up to someone smarter then me to decide.
